Are you looking for the ultimate adrenaline experience?

OR

Do you love being in the water surrounded by sharks?

OR

DO YOU WANT THE PERFECT SHARK PHOTOGRAPH?

If you answer YES to any of these questions,

a BAITED SHARK DIVE ON PROTEA BANKS is just what you are looking for …

The TIGER SHARK is a regular visitor on a BAITED SHARK DIVE on PROTEA BANKS in the warmer months. Throughout the year, BULL (ZAMBEZI) SHARKS and OCEANIC BLACKTIP SHARKS are almost always seen on a BAITED SHARK DIVE. Dusky sharks are seen periodically on these dives, and then of course with PROTEA BANKS, just about anything can happen!

The SHARKS are initially attracted through a ‘scent’. A drum filled with bait is then lowered into the water and lies at 10m. The Divemaster then ‘works’ the drum to get SHARK activity around it. Once the Divemaster is happy with the results, divers are invited into the water for an action packed and unforgettable dive experience!

As with any of our diving, safety is our priority. You will be given an extensive dive briefing regarding safety and behaviour. We have never had an incident with the SHARKS.

The SHARKS on these dives get very close to the divers, which makes it the perfect dive for those interested in photographing SHARKS.

PLEASE NOTE: Although we endeavour to give you a MIND BLOWING EXPERIENCE, we are dealing with nature, which is very unpredictable. The success rate of seeing SHARKS on these dives is well over 95% but SHARK activity can never be 100% guaranteed.

As we only go to 10m, this dive is suitable to anyone with an Open Water diving certification and above. You need to be comfortable in the water and have decent buoyancy.

DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!

Rated as a top dive site, ALIWAL SHOAL, a fossilized sand dune lies about 4km offshore from the small coastal town of Umkomaas, on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast of South Africa.

'The Shoal' gives divers the unique opportunity to experience wreck, reef and seasonal shark diving at the same site. ALIWAL SHOAL boasts an abundance of aquatic life from Nudibranchs to Manta Rays, including Turtles, Dolphins, Eels and a great variety of tropical fish species. During the winter months the RAGGED-TOOTH SHARKS congregate on 'The Shoal' to mate.

AQUA PLANET DIVE CENTRE AND CHARTER does not run a charter boat to Aliwal Shoal, however we are happy to accommodate a booking to Aliwal Shoal, as an add on to your trip to PROTEA BANKS, Shelly Beach.

  • Raising Awareness of Ocean Pollution in South Africa

Raising Awareness of Ocean Pollution in South Africa

The issue of ocean pollution is enormously important for divers. When you are out on a dive, you rely on crystal-clear waters to be able to see the incredible wildlife and plants. If there is a high level of pollution, then the sharks and sea turtles simply will not be able to survive. The oceans of South Africa have been rated the 11th worst for plastic pollution in the world and 80% of this pollution has originated from land-based sources. If the ocean creatures are to thrive, then this picture simply isn’t sustainable. We need to raise awareness and help to combat ocean pollution from a grassroots level.

  • Whole Grains, Lean Meat, and Lots of Water: The Deep Sea Diving Diet

Whole Grains, Lean Meat, and Lots of Water: The Deep Sea Diving Diet

Since deep sea diving entails plunging to depths of 40 meters, a certain diet should be maintained by divers lest they want to experience discomfort during their underwater journey. At such depths, divers need to be energetic, limber, and focused, which can all be achieved with diet. Without the right nutrition, divers can get cramps, the bends, and worse. But don’t let any of this dissuade you from going on a scuba adventure with sublime sea life. Eating a deep diving diet is simple – it starts with carbs and ends with water.

  • Cleaning Your Scuba Gear The Natural Way

Cleaning Your Scuba Gear The Natural Way

If you have a passion for scuba diving and seeing the incredible beauty of South African sharks in their natural habitat, then you have probably invested a fair amount in your diving gear. Your dive equipment is important to keep you safe whilst you are underwater. If it isn’t looked after properly then your gear can become susceptible to mold and mildew and the rubber will crack. Cleaning your scuba diving equipment every time you have finished using it, will prevent this from happening. You don’t need to use harsh chemicals for this - you can clean your gear the natural way, with fresh water and a little eco-friendly shampoo.
