Towards the end of the dive we were rewarded with 50+ Hammerhead sharks ... YAY!

10 December 2012 | PROTEA BANKS

Viz: 25m at the surface but dirty coming down
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: We saw 1 Dusky shark in mid water. During our bottom time we picked up shoaling Kingfish and Tuna. Had beautiful visibility from the surface to about 20m. Saw plenty of Fingerfin lazing about.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: We saw 1 small Oceanic Blacktip shark in mid water. Had 1 Musselcracker briefly swim up to the group. Towards the end of the dive we were rewarded with 50+ Hammerhead sharks ... YAY! Saw some lovely 'jellies' near the surface.

DIVE 1 - AREA 51: Dropped onto beautiful pinnacles and overhangs. Saw 1 friendly Potato Bass. Reef and game fish. In mid water we saw a school of Hammerhead sharks. Lots of interesting 'jellies' on the safety stop.

Had one curious Remora in mid water ...

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: The reef was bustling with fish. Saw 2 Potato Bass during our bottom time. We were then joined by 2 Scalloped Hammerhead sharks very briefly in mid water. Had one curious Remora in mid water.

DIVE 2 - AREA 51: We saw 2 Potato Bass and 2 large unidentified sharks. Kingfish and lots of reef fish. Great dive!!

Sea Temp: 17 to 21 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - AREA 51: 1 large Round Ribbontail Ray. Along the reef, saw plenty of Red Fang Triggerfish and Big Eye Kingfish. In mid water we had 1 curious Dusky shark and a Brindle Bass.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: The reef was alive with fish. Saw a couple of Crayfish in the overhangs. In mid water and up to the 5m mark, we had plenty of interesting 'jellies' to look at. A wonderful day to dive!

Northern Pinnacles: Dropped into very bad viz (3m!!!), but it opened up from about 25m so we could see a lot of the reef with plenty of fish hanging around. Drifted over the canyon area of the reef. Had shoaling Tuna and Kingfish to name a few. (100's!!) Absolutely amazing to have so many big, friendly game fish enjoying our company. Also had 2 Potato Bass ... one very curious one! No sharks, but the beauty of the reef made up for it. Really stunning dive.

Sea Temp: 18 to 21 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - AREA 51: Beautiful part of Protea Banks to explore! Plenty of pinnacles and canyons to explore. Loads of reef fish, as well as 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark. Also saw 1 Potato Bass with a Hammerhead in the distance behind it. Shoaling Tuna and Fusliers - WOW and also saw a couple of Nudibranchs the bottom.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: Got to the first cave and had fun looking in the depths of it with a torch. A couple of Ragged-tooth sharks hanging round and also 1 Potato Bass. Plenty of reef fish to see as well.

DIVE 3 - AREA 51: Not a long dive because viz was getting worse at this point. But still managed to see plenty of reef fish before coming up to our safety stop.

Nudibranchs ...

Viz: 10m at bottom, 5m from mid water up to safety stop
Sea Temp: 18 to 21 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped into a very dark milky ocean, but cleared up a bit on the bottom. No current, so had a great time looking at all the fish activity on the bottom. Saw 3 beautiful Nudibranchs and loads of reef fish. Unfortunately no sharks, but plenty of interesting 'jellies' to keep us entertained on the safety stop.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: Dropped into the second cave. 1 Trumpet fish, Nudibranchs and shark teeth to look at. Carried on towards the end of the swim through where there was lots of fish activity around the rock formations. Finished our bottom time and ended the dive with 'jellies' on our safety stop.

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacles: Saw plenty of Natal Knifejaw. We past a couple beautiful large feather corals. Had 1 large Round Ribbontail Ray. Lots of reef fish.  

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: We dropped in on a Guinea Fowl Eel, wow!! Plenty reef fish and lots of different kinds of 'jellies'.

Dropped in on a big shoal of Tuna.

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped in on a big shoal of Tuna. Saw 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and plenty of reef fish. Caught a glimpse of a couple of Scalloped Hammerheads in the distance. Some lovely 'jellies' at the safety stop.  

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: Saw 1 Potato Bass near the caves. Inside the caves there were 4 Ragged-tooth sharks who came out to meet us. Lots of reef fish and very pretty inside the caves.

Sea Temp: very cold at the bottom, 21 degrees Celsius mid water

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Plenty of Oceanic Blacktip sharks and Dusky sharks throughout the dive. 1 Ragged-tooth shark on the bottom. 1 friendly Potato Bass and 1 Round Ribbontail Ray.  One small shoal Tuna. On the safety stop we had 50+ shoaling Hammerhead sharks - GREAT END TO THE FIRST DIVE!!!

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: Got to caves and saw 1 Marbled Electric Ray hiding in the sand and close to that, one Firefish. Saw 2 large Brindle Bass and 1 Potato Bass. Throughout the dive, we encountered 5 Ragged-tooth sharks and spotted a large White Musslecracker. Lots of Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out. Also 2 Bull (Zambezi) sharks.

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Saw Humpback Whales breaching on the surface before we dropped. Had 2 large Round Ribbontail Rays pass by. Spotted 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark in the distance. Also a large shoal of Fingerfin fish. Wonderful viz on the bottom. Saw a couple of Trigger fish as well and lots of Plankton.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: Saw 1 Pufferfish as well as one very large shoal Tuna. 3 Round Ribbontail Rays and 1 Musslecracker mid water. Loads of reef fish.

Southern Pinnacles: Dropped into loads of shoaling reef and game fish. Drifted over a Round Ribbontail Ray and a friendly Potato Bass. Spotted 2 schools of Hammerhead sharks that swam quite close to us and then later some more Hammerhead sharks that checked us out on the 10m mark. Had about 4 Oceanic Blacktip sharks that popped in and out from 10m to the 5m safety stop. Nice, chilled dive!

2 Greater Hammerhead sharks, and more ...

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped in on 3 Round Ribbontail Rays (1baby). We saw 4 Oceanic Blacktip sharks, most of them occurring from midwater and up. Water was turquoise from mid water up, lovely. Had one group of shoaling Hammerhead sharks, WOW!! Also saw 2 Greater Hammerhead sharks.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: We saw 1 Guitar shark and a huge shoal of Bigeye Kingfish. Stumbled across one large, very well hidden Round Ribbontail Ray. And lastly saw shoaling Hammerhead sharks in mid water along with one absolutely huge Greater Hammerhead shark.

Dusky and Hammerhead sharks ... great day of diving!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: A big school of Dolphins on the surface before the drop site - great start!!! Dropped in on a large shoal of Bigeye Kingfish. Spotted 1 small Bull (Zambezi) shark from above. Then we saw 3 Scalloped Hammerhead sharks and had 5 groups of shoaling Hammerhead sharks throughout the dive. Encountered 6 Oceanic Blacktip sharks mid water. Also had a couple of Dusky sharks at the end of the dive.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped in on a very curious Dusky shark. The reef was alive with fish on the bottom. Sighted one group of shoaling Hammerhead sharks, then stumbled across 1 Round Ribbontail Ray. Mid water, saw a massive group of Dusky sharks (+20). Also saw 2 Hammerhead sharks on the safety stop. Lots of interesting 'jellies' to look at. A great day of diving!!

Southern Pinnacles: Dropped into loads of reef and game fish! Saw a Potato Bass, a MASSIVE Musselcracker and over 4 different schools of Hammerhead sharks (100's!) Also one Greater Hammerhead shark scouting the bottom and also 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark that popped in and out on the safety stop. Lovely dive!

Saw Barracuda, Oceanic Blacktip sharks, Dusky sharks and Hammerhead sharks all shoaling together.

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped into beautiful water with sun shining - what a change! Ocean floor was alive with reef fish. Saw an Eagle Ray. Had Oceanic Blacktip sharks and Dusky sharks popping in and out of vision for the duration of the dive. The cherry on the cake was the 6 encounters with Hammerhead sharks (100's at a time!!!) with shoaling Barracuda mixing with the sharks ... amazing sight!!!  

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Saw Barracuda, Oceanic Blacktip sharks, Dusky sharks and Hammerhead sharks all shoaling together. Lucky enough to have 5 sightings of Hammerhead shark groups. Saw the largest Hammerhead shark (about +4m!!!) At the 5m mark, we saw plenty of inquisitive Dusky sharks and one lone Oceanic Blacktip shark. SO EPIC!!!!!

here were literally 100’s of Hammerhead sharks that completely surrounded the group multiple times!!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: We saw Humpback Whales and Dolphins on the boat ride out, ended up snorkelling with the Dolphins twice before our dives began ...  then dropped in on Dusky sharks, Oceanic Blacktip sharks and a big Potato Bass! We saw a massive Eagle Ray. Had 10 or so Dusky and Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out of view. Saw shoaling Hammerhead sharks about 8 times. There were literally 100’s of Hammerhead sharks that completely surrounded the group multiple times!! In mid water we were visited by a school of about 25 Dolphins. A truly breathtaking dive!!

Dive 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped in on a small Dusky shark. Had 6+ separate encounters with Hammerhead sharks (100’s!)!!! Lots of 'jellies'.

The diving today absolutely blows your mind!!!!!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles - THE ARCH: Well firstly, we had a Humpback Whale on the boat ride out and then a huge school of Dolphins guide us to our drop site as we rolled in - GREAT START!!! Dropped in on a Bull (Zambezi) shark and an Oceanic Blacktip shark before making our way to the bottom. Saw over 6 different schools of Hammerhead sharks, as well as some Greater Hammerhead sharks roaming around. Over 15+ Guitar sharks at Sandshark Gully, accompanied by 2 HUGE Round Ribbontail Rays, 3 Eagle Rays and a lovely big Potato Bass - WOW! Had a couple of Oceanic Blacktip sharks pop in and out as well as one Dusky shark on the bottom. What an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime dive!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Saw over 5+ different schools of Hammerhead sharks and a couple of Greater Hammerhead sharks. Also saw one Guitar shark and another two MASSIVE Eagle  Rays! WOW! Also spotted some shoaling Dusky sharks (REALLY!!!) Had about 3 Oceanic Blacktip sharks pop in throughout the whole dive, and one VERY cheeky one on the safety stop.
Can't believe the dives we've had today!!! Absolutely mind blowing!!!

We got caught in a ball of HUNDREDS of Hammerhead sharks, to the point where we couldn't see each other anymore! WOW!!!!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles - THE ARCH: Whew, where to start! Got to THE ARCH where there was a huge shoal of Kingfish. Mid water the sharks started pulling in and we had 20+ Dusky sharks that popped in and out throughout the whole dive! Also saw over 5 different schools of Hammerhead sharks. On the safety stop we had 2 Scalloped Hammerhead sharks as well as beautiful 'jellies'. INCREDIBLE DIVE!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped in a baby Oceanic Blacktip shark. Then Dusky sharks all over. Mid water, we got caught in a ball of HUNDREDS of Hammerhead sharks, to the point where we couldn't see each other anymore! WOW!!!! Also had a really friendly Remora on our safety stop.

What a fantastic day of diving!!!!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Had a Humpback Whale just north of our drop sight just before entry - lovely start! And that was just the beginning! Dropped in on loads of game and reef fish. Drifted over Sand Shark Gully, and saw 3 Guitar sharks (WOW!) being followed by a massive Hammerhead shark!! But there is still more to come ... from 25m+ spotted over 4 seperate schools of Hammerhead shraks!!! Also managed to see a big Oceanic Blacktip shark cruising on the bottom. At the safety stop, had another Oceanic Blacktip shark say goodbye to us as we ended a truly ama-ZING dive! Smiling from the inside out :)

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Wind picked up a bit at this point, but still managed to see a Hammerhead shark and a big Guitar shark with a baby next to it (lovely!) Loads of game and reef fish to see as well. At our safety stop we had another curious Oceanic Blacktip shark come see what was happening.

Great diving all in all. Smiles everywhere!!!
