CLEAR WATER REEF ACTION!!!!

31 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: weak
Viz: 25m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacle: An action packed day on the reef! We managed to see petty much everything imaginable on the first dive, Hammerheads, Bull (Zambezi) sharks, Tiger sharks, Eagle Rays and Sandsharks ... we saw them all. Combine the marine life with amazing visibility and very warm water, it was absolutely amazing!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: The second dive was less eventful, with us only seeing a lone Bull (Zambezi) shark and a shoal of 15 Hammerheads, but again the crystal clear, warm water made the dive highly enjoyable!

GREAT ACTION ON THE REEF!!!

28 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 15 - 20m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius at the surface

DIVE 1 - Baited Shark Dive: We had a slow start to the baited dive, but after we relocated the bait drum once, we finally started to get some action. We had the appearance of an Oceanic Blacktip shark, named 'Smiley', and two of his friends. Towards the end of the dive we also had a male Bull (Zambezi) shark named 'Spot' arrive with a pair of his friends as well.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: We had a very warm dive, filled with lots of entertainment. Hammerhead sharks, Oceanic Blacktip sharks, Potato Bass, Bull (Zambezi) sharks, we saw them all. We even had a bit of entertainment from the Divemaster giving his weightbelt to an under weighted diver, and from watching some students performing skills. We had a great day overall.

SLOW AND CALM TODAY.

26 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: slight
Viz:10m
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: With viz changing everyday, today was on the lesser side. We had 10m on the bottom and about 15m top viz. On the reef we had lots of reef fish and 2 Ribbontail Rays. Looking up from the bottom we saw a MASSIVE school of Tuna. Also spotting a Potato Bass. Whilst we multi leveled to the surface we had 1 school of Hammerhead sharks.

SUPER CLEAN WATER TODAY ... 30M VIZ!!

24 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: nil
Viz: 30m
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: As we did our backwards roll and turned around I could already see the reef, we don't often have such good viz. Our hammerheads saw us coming way before we could see them. We did have 1 big Greater Hammerhead shark come very close on the reef and we had 1 normal Scalloped Hammerhead shark in mid water. On the reef we had our local Potato Bass come and say hello. During our multi level we had 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks come by.

BAITED DIVE AND REEF DIVE TODAY!

22 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Sea Temp: 21 degrees Celsius near the surface and 20 degrees Celsius on the bottom

DIVE 1 - Baited Shark Dive: 2 Zambezi (Bull) sharks including 'Spot' our new awesome local male Bull shark. 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and 1 Dusky shark. Dolphins were seen around the drum just before we got in.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: A lot colder today on Protea. On the reef we had 20 degrees and not much today. A Potato Bass and 2 Hammerhead sharks were seen today.

SHARKS GALORE ON PROTEA BANKS TODAY!!!!

21 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 15m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius near the surface and 21 degrees Celsius on the bottom

DIVE 1 - Baited Shark Dive: Started off with 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks passing the drum. After about 20 minutes we had 5 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and 3 Zambezi (Bull) sharks staying around. We also had a Greater Hammerhead shark and 2 Scalloped Hammerhead sharks passing by. Ooohh and we had Tuna dashing in and out.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: We had Hammerhead sharks throughout our dive!! Schools of scalloped Hammerhead and Greater Hammerhead sharks ... we also had a group of Zambezi (Bull) sharks follow us around - 5 of them staying around. Then some Sandsharks over the reef and Oceanic Blacktip sharks dashing in and out.

ANOTHER GREAT DAY OF DIVING, WHEN ARE YOU COMING???

17 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m surface, 15m bottom
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Baited Shark Dive: Once again we got our awesome male Bull (Zambezi) shark although he only came onto the dive about 20 minutes into the dive. Otherwise we had 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and 2 Bull (Zambezi) sharks keeping us busy on our baited today.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: We had a brilliant drift dive on south today. Over 6 schools of Hammerhead sharks seen, definitely seeing more than a 1000 hammers! As we made it to Sandshark Gully they were everywhere, over 40 spotted whilst also having Hammerheads above our heads. 1 Eagle Ray and 1 Ribbontail Ray also spotted closer to the end of the dive. 1 Bull (Zambezi) shark came in pretty close while doing our multi level and another 2 Bull (Zambezi) sharks spotted in the area.

A PROPER BULL SHARK BAITED!!

16 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Baited Shark Dive: A super Baited today, Dominated by the Bull (Zambezi) sharks. In total we had 5 Bull (Zambezi) sharks with 3 of them coming real close and staying around. The star of the dive was a male Bull (Zambezi) shark who gave us a great show, real comfortable and majestic. We did have a slight viewing of a Tiger shark but due to the Bulls on the ball I don't think he thought it was worth coming in. An Oceanic Blacktip was with us for the whole dive although he was honestly getting in the way. 1 Dusky shark was also seen. In the end amazing dive with our Bull sharks.

ANOTHER DOUBLE TANK, DOUBLE HAMMERED!!.

15 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacle: First dive on south was rather slow on the reef, seeing only 1 Bull (Zambezi) shark and some reef fish. A Tiger was spotted just before Sandshark Gully. As we made it to Sandshark Gully we could see at least 10 scattered all over the patch. As we started with our multi level up the Hammerhead sharks starting coming through, seeing a few small pockets and at least 2 schools. With our Bull sharks definitely showing up more and giving more interest, we had 2 Bull sharks come right up to us while sitting at about 15m.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: So we had decided to go south again but instead of focusing on the first bit of the reef we wanted some more time at Sandshark Gully. In the end we dropped on The Arch cutting our reef in half. At The Arch, we had some good amounts of fish sitting out the current and 1 Potato Bass. On the bottom, we had 1 Bull (Zambezi) shark right away. As we drifted on and towards Sandshark Gully we had only 1 Guitar shark there but he was a BIG boy! On the edge of the sand patch we had 6 Eagle Rays and a few Ribbontail Rays. As we began our multi-level up, we once again had a few good sighting of Hammerhead sharks. On this dive I would say we saw about 6 schools of Hammerheads as well as smaller pockets scattered. 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark spotted.

2 DIVES WITH REALLY STRONG CURRENT.

14 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m on the surface, 15m on the bottom
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacle: As we backwards rolled we had a Bull (Zambezi) shark under us waiting to say Hello. Soon afterwards we had our first Hammerhead sighting getting us real excited for a Hammerhead dive. In the end we only saw 2 schools of Hammers. As we made it to Sandshark Gully we spotted at least 30 Guitar sharks. As we drifted off we had 2 Bull (Zambezi) sharks come and drift along with us, one of them coming real close when  I flashed for his attention.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacle: With a drift dive planned over the caves, we went straight over, looking inside we could see no Ragged-tooth sharks. Continuing with our drift we came across two schools of Hammerhead sharks. Whilst still with the reef we also had a good size Brindle Bass come and play with us on this dive. From start to end about 60 minutes dive, we had drifted 4 KM!!!

FAST PACE DRIFT DIVE TODAY, MANY SPECIES SPOTTED.

10 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 10m, milky
Sea Temp: 21 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: As we backwards rolled and made our way down it was clear we didn't have the best viz. Whilst making our way down we descended straight onto a group of Hammerheads group including 3 big Greater Hammerheads. After our quick Hammer interaction we re-positioned ourselves for the fast pace drift over the reef. Our local Potato Bass friend came to say hello but we actually couldn't spend any time with her due to need to keep posture and balance, just as she had left us we came across a good sized Turtle just before Kingfish Gully. As we zoomed in through Kingfish Gully,  there was a lot of life in the bowl all hiding away from the current using minimal energy. After Kingfish Gully we again saw some Hammerheads but at a bit of a distance. With our clearly strong current today we started heading out to sea at this point to make sure we get to Sandshark Gully, once there we saw about 10 Sandsharks and about 15 Round Ribbontail rays.

NICE AND BLUE TODAY, A VERY GOOD DRIFT.

7 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m
Sea Temp: 22 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: So we had a great drift dive today, nice blue water and a nice speed current to push us along the reef. We had an Oceanic Blacktip right in the beginning and a school of Hammerhead sharks. In total we had about 3 proper schools of Hammerheads, with a few small pockets seen including a few Greater Hammerheads on their own. Our friendly Potato Bass was there waiting for us and we had a great interaction. Kingfish Gully was full up again today with hundreds darting past and through us. Sandshark Gully also had approximately 10 Guitar sharks lined up. All in all was a great slow (and fast) relaxed dive.

MILKY WATER ON PROTEA BANKS BUT NOT WITHOUT ACTION

6 December 2020 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 15m but milky
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: Lots of Hammerhead sharks on Protea Banks today, but with the milky water they were not seen very clearly. A Bull (Zambezi) shark seen at the beginning of the dive as well as Greater Hammerhead shark. Kingfish Gully lived up to its name with 100’s and 100’s of Kingfish being seen. Sandshark Gully also lived up to its name with at least 8 Guitar sharks being seen. An Eagle Ray was also spotted on the dive.

On the reef we did have a Bull (Zambezi) shark and an Oceanic Blacktip shark but it was all eyes on the Hammerheads. With the strong current we had made it to Sandshark Gully and had about 15 Guitar sharks.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: On this second dive we got our Potato Bass friend in and he stayed with us during our bottom time, also spotting schools of Hammerheads from the reef and alot of reef fish. During our multilevel we saw a lot of Hammers but not as many as in the morning.
