4 SPECIES OF SHARKS, TOP TO BOTTOM VIZ ... AND MY TWO BOYS, Dru de Bruyn AND Ty de Bruyn, ON PROTEA BANKS FOR THE FIRST TIME!

23 January 2016 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 30m (Plankton near the surface)
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacle: As we got to the dive site there were already Dolphins, but unfortunately by the time we got in the water they were gone. As we dropped in we could see all the way to the bottom ... fantastic viz! Kingfish Gully was alive, a Potato Bass chilling there and lots of Kingfish and reef fish. We had Zambezi (Bull), Oceanic Blacktip or Hammerhead sharks entertaining us for the entire dive. On Sand Shark Gully, we had a Guitar shark and 2 Round Ribbontail Rays. Midwater we had a shoal of about 50 Hammerhead sharks. On the safety stop, just as we were about to get out a Copper shark came to say Hi.

DIVE 2 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: With at least 9 different Zambezi (Bull) sharks on the dive and great viz, there was non stop action. I also saw a Hammerhead sharks in the distance. We also had 3 Dolphins. Also a few reef fish popping in and out. EPIC DIVE!!. What made this dive super special, it was the first time I had my 2 boys on Protea Banks. Ty de Bruyn, only 8, assisted by Jenelle Pillay and Tyrone Edwards got to snorkel with the Zambezi (Bull) sharks. Dru de Bruyn, only 10, came down with me on scuba to about 5m and saw some Zambezi (Bull) sharks, but unfortunately his ears were hurting so he got out. I AM SUCH A PROUD MOMMY TODAY! XXXX

We also saw Dolphins and Flying fish from the boat.

On Sand Shark Gully we had a Round Ribbontail Ray, when we looked up we had 100's and 1000's of shoaling Hammerhead sharks, when we looked down we had a mixture of Zambezi (Bull) and Oceanic Blacktip sharks and I am sure a few Dusky sharks as well - IT WAS INSANE and that was pretty much the rest of the dive, looking up or to the side, Hammerhead sharks and looking down more Zambezi and Oceanic Blacktip sharks ... woohooo. INCREDIBLE ZAMBEZI ACTION ON PROTEA BANKS!!

17 January 2016 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium to strong
Viz: 30m till we got to 15m and then the viz was only 5 to 10m, patchy
Sea Temp: 25 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacle: The water was clear as we got in but as we got deeper the viz reduced. The current had picked up a lot compared to yesterday and was too strong to struggle to get into the caves so we just whizzed by. As we got into mid water the Zambezi (Bull) sharks started appearing and we ended the dive with at least 7 coming in and out - absolutely fantastic. A couple of Oceanic Blacktip sharks attempted to say Hi, but the Zam's chased them away. Mid water felt an aquarium with Rainbow Runners, Bonito, False Fussliers and Surgeon fish to name a few, flying around us. WHAT A DIVE!!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: As we got into the water and were regrouping a Zambezi (Bull) shark already popped in to say Hi, and the Zambezi action did not stop until we got out of the water - at least 4 Zambezi sharks. Just to add a bit of flavour, we had 5 Hammerhead sharks come in very close mid water. At the bottom, loads of reef fish, some Kingfish, a Potato Bass and 2 Round Ribbontail Rays. ANOTHER STUNNING DIVE!!

EPIC ... MIND BLOWING ... WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! SO, SO, SO, SO, MANY SHARKS ON PROTEA BANKS!!!

9 January 2016 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium - strong
Viz: 30m (lots of Plankton in the first 5m and then clear)
Sea Temp: 25 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: As we dropped in, the water was blue, blue, blue!!! We got down to the reef, the usaul suspects were around - a Potato Bass, lots of Kingfish, shoaling Rainbow Runners and plenty of reef fish. As we got to Sand Shark Gully we started seeing the Guitar sharks - there must have been about 8 in total. Also 3 Round Ribbontail Rays on the bottom. We also saw a Zambezi (Bull) shark and an Oceanic Blacktip shark. We then had some more Zambezi (Bull) shark action. Midwater ... what can I say ... shoaling Hammerhead sharks and then Zambezi (Bull) sharks popping in out and then more shoaling Hammerhead sharks and then Zambezi (Bull) sharks popping in and out. At one stage we were surrounded by Hammerhead sharks - must have seen 1000's and 1000's of Hammerhead sharks today. smile emoticon This action continued for about 30 minutes, till we got to our safety stop. On the safety stop we had a few more visits from a Zambezi (Bull) shark. We were also surrounded by shoaling Rainbow Runners. WHAT AN ACTION PACKED EXCITING DIVE!!!!! WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!

BAITED SHARK DIVE: What can I say ... a perfect baited shark dive to end the day. Michelle counted 15 different Zambezi (Bull) sharks on the drum, I counted 13 - but since she was on the drum and it her business to know where her sharks are, we will go with 15 Zambezi (Bull) sharks. The Zambezi (Bull) sharks dominated the drum again, which sent the only two Oceanic Blacktip sharks scuttling after a few minutes. Also some Bonita and as we came up a big shoal of Tuna. Lots of Plankton.

Dolphins and a Flying Fish seen from the boat.

What an absolutely incredible day of diving. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Current: 'Protea Express', (very strong current)
Viz: 15 - 20m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacle: As we got in the water we already had a Zambezi (Bull) shark. We must have had at least 6 different Zambezi (Bull) sharks in and out of the dive with at least 4 Zambezi (Bull) sharks circling us and following us all the way up. EPIC!! Also two sets of shoaling Hammerhead sharks which must have had about 100+ Hammerhead sharks! 1 massive Potato Bass! Lots of reef fish seen quickly.

TODAY THE DIVE ON PROTEA BANKS WAS ABOUT QUALITY NOT QUANTITY ... LOL!!!

3 January 2016 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: 'Protea Express', (drifted 11km on the baited)
Viz: 20m (water clean but milky)
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

BAITED SHARK DIVE: We got into the water quickly as the divers were feeling a bit sea sick, so we did not do much pre-baiting. It took awhile for some action. At first a few Tuna flying by and lots of Plankton to keep us busy. And then the BIGGEST Zambezi (Bull) shark came in and dominated the dive. It was actually great just to see one shark on the dive as we really got to take notice of the sharks behavior. Well worth a dive!

Flying Fish seen from the boat.

ONE OF THE MOST INSANE BAITED SHARK DIVES ON PROTEA BANKS EVER!!!

2 January 2016 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 15 - 20m (water clean but milky)
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacle: On our way down we had an Oceanic Blacktip shark pop into say Hi. At the bottom the current was strong. We had a HUGE shoal of Bigeye Kingfish. Lots of reef fish but seen very quickly. Just before our ascent we had another Oceanic Blacktip. Mid water we had 2 Zambezi (Bull) sharks pop in. From midwater all the way to the surface we had Rainbow Runners around us.

DIVE 2 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: The wind had picked up so we decided to get into the water soon after dropping the drum. For the first 5 minutes there was absolutely nothing, which made me think of Bradley James. No sooner had I had that thought, 2 Zambezi (Bull) sharks were spotted, and then another and then another ... IT WAS INSANE. At least 7 Zambezi (Bull) sharks behaving like Oceanic Blacktips, all over the drum, in between the divers and fighting ... EPIC. We also saw two Oceanic Blacktip sharks, but even they kept their distance when they saw the 'unruly' Zambezi sharks. Also lots of Rainbow Runners around and a few Remora. WHAT AN EPIC ENERGISED DIVE ... WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!!!!
