22 August 2015 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 8 – 15m, good at top and bottom, not so great mid water
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

HAMMERHEAD SHARKS on both dives!!!

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacle: As we got to the bottom we had a Potato Bass or two and lots of shoaling gamefish. Not too much current so made it to the first cave no problem, where we spent most of our bottom time. Only about 5 Ragged-tooth sharks in the cave … found some teeth. As we got out the cave we had a Nudibranch … lol … Paul Russell. In mid water a couple of Hammerhead sharks were seen by some of the divers – viz not fantastic. A few minutes later I saw a Hammerhead shark and then behind it at least 50 Hammerhead sharks, whoop, whoop … soon after another shoal of Hammerhead sharks were spotted … so cool … not at all how I imagined the dive would turn out. Also an Oceanic Blacktip shark mid water.

Also so much interesting Plankton. The sound of Whales for almost the whole dive!!!

DIVE 2 – Southern Pinnacle: About 3 Ragged-tooth sharks around the Southern Pinnacle. Also a couple of sightings of Hammerhead sharks. The Southern Pinnacle was stunning today lots of Fingerfin, Kingfish and a nice variety of reef fish, including a Lionfish. Mid water was quiet but we did see lots of interesting Plankton and the Whales were so loud again.

Lots and lots of Whales seen from the boat today, as well as some Flying fish.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: As we got in an Oceanic Blacktip shark came to say Hi. About 20 Ragged-tooth sharks scattered around the reef. On the way up we had Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in on out of the dive, for the rest of the dive. Also some shoals of Bonito around. The sound of Humpback Whales was so loud, we though we would see them at any minute ... but no not this dive ... sad face.

Also spotted an Oceanic Blacktip shark above the cave. We then had more Ragged-tooth sharks at the bottom (must have seen more than 40+ altogether) and a Potato Bass. Also saw a Crown of Thorns on the ridge and lots of fish.

In mid water we started picking up Oceanic Blacktip sharks, that ended up staying with us for the entire dive - at the end of the dive we had at least 5 flying in and out. Also a Zambezi (Bull) shark and a Potato Bass hanging around underneath us. Lots of Bonito and False Fusiliers around.

While we were chilling out mid water and having a look at the Oceanic Blacktip sharks a HUMPBACK WHALE also decided to come flying past us ... whoop, whoop, whoop!!! What can I say, it was well worth getting out my warm bed for that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

25 July 2015 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium, reverse
Viz: 30m, but reduced on the second dive
Sea Temp: 21 degrees Celsius

So of course when I hear that a BLACK MARLIN was seen on the dive the day before, while I was doing admin, of course it only makes sense that Michelle is going to get admin to do the next day, so that I can dive. So I braved the very cold wind but it was well worth it …

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacle: As we hit the water it was so WARM (not sure if it was that warm or the wind was just so cold … brrrrrrrrrrr), and top to bottom viz. As we got down we saw Ragged-tooth sharks leading to the first cave. The first cave was full of Ragged-tooth sharks. Managed to fine some sharks teeth. In mid water we had a few Oceanic Blacktip sharks come past. The sound of Whales was so loud we were spinning around for the rest of the dive trying to catch a glimpse of them … we did not see them, but the sound was incredible!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacle: As we got down I saw a Ragged-tooth shark and Zambezi (Bull) shark swimming together side by side … had to look twice just to make sure … but then again, I have seen stranger (Michelle in her onesie at work). Also a Potato Bass. About a minute later I saw more Ragged-tooth sharks and then more and then more, leading to a stunning crevice. Must have seen more than 40+. I had a request to find a Nudibranch for a diver, but never found the Nudibranch as I got so absorbed in the ‘Raggies’ and reef … stunning!!!! If the dive had ended there it would have been considered a top dive, but of course on PROTEA BANKS we always have mid water and WOW, WOW, WOW … Zambezi (Bull) sharks and Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out, till we got to the boat. Also shoaling Bonito and Rainbow Runners in and out. So many other fish seen as well. Viz just not so great on the safety stop, as full of Plankton and Jellyfish. And of course on the dive the sound of Whales and Dolphins … we missed the Dolphins … Jaco said about 100 passed about 20m from the buoy line and we could only see about 10m … sad face.

And with so many Humpback Whales seen from the boat today, all and all great to be out at sea … I just wished Jaco had remembered the ‘heater’ ... brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

PROTEA BANKS ... TIGER SHARKS ... A GREAT DAY FOR BRADLEY AND KYM!!!

9 July 2015 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 20m
Sea Temp: 22 degrees Celsuis

Northern Pinnacle: As we dropped the viz was amazing and we knew it was going to be a great day on Protea Banks ... even if the wind had picked up and the sea was rough. As we got down we saw some Ragged-tooth sharks scattered on the bottom. We were then met by a couple of Potato Bass. Also saw some Oceanic Blacktip sharks and in the distance a TIGER SHARK. After this I lost my mind ...

(SOME HISTORY FIRST: Bradley James had been diving with me for 5 years on Protea Banks. He has seen the usual suspects, Zam's, Blacktips, Raggies etc. even a Blue shark ... but the elusive TIGER SHARK has always eluded him. The fact that he normally only comes to the coast in July did not help with his quest to see a TIGER SHARK as this is pretty much out of the season).

So ... where was I ... oh yes, I lost my mind due to the fact that now I had a TIGER SHARK and guess what ... Bradley didn't see it. So we continued the dive. I know we had several Zambezi (Bull) sharks and Oceanic Blacktip sharks ... but I was I my zone and only focused on one thing, showing Bradley a TIGER SHARK ... so while everyone else was looking at the other sharks ... I was chanting to myself TIGER SHARK, TIGER SHARK, TIGER SHARK!!!

So the dive continued and I had another sighting of a TIGER SHARK ... so excited I turned around and guess what Bradley did not see it. And then another sighting of a TIGER SHARK ... yes, you guessed it ... no Bradley.

AND THEN, there it was clear as day ... a TIGER SHARK. I was finning and pointing and finning and pointing and shouting and finning and and and ... AND I looked to my side and there was Bradley and HE HAD FINALLY SEEN A TIGER SHARK!!! One of the hightlights of my diving career ... I will never forget that moment Bradley!!!

On the safety stop the sound of Whales was so intense ... just Badley and Kym left in the water ... I was so sure we would see some ... but alas not today ... at least that leaves a reason for Bradley to keep coming back to Protea Banks.
