20 December 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 5 to 8m
Sea Temp: 22 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: So the current slacked off again and the viz reduced. The reef was full up with gamefish - Yellowfin Tuna and Tropical Yellowtail. A Greater Hammerhead shark and an Oceanic Blacktip shark were seen on the dive. There were other Hammerheads around but just out of sight. An Eagle Ray was also seen.

STUNNING VIZ ON PROTEA BANKS TODAY ...

19 December 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 25m+
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: So with the current picking up, Protea Banks was sooooo clean today. Just a bit of Plankton left but like diving into the blue. There were a few fish around which were all seen very quickly because of the current. On Sand Shark Gully we saw two Guitar sharks and a Round Ribbontail Ray. Also about 10 Hammerhead sharks were seen as well as an Oceanic Blacktip shark. Hard conditions today but well worth the dive.

On the way back we had a HUGE school of Dolphins. And with flat seas who can complain.

SHOALING HAMMERHEAD SHARKS AND MORE ON PROTEA BANKS ...

18 December 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 15m+, just milky - viz dropped on the second dive
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: The dive started with a glimpse of a Hammerhead shark and then a Ragged-tooth shark just chilling on Southerns - really!!!! And then not much happened until mid water when we got a 100+++ Hammerhead sharks that come past and we managed to get so close to them - EPIC. After that we had 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping and and out, with the odd Hammerhead shark passing under us.

Lots of interesting Plankton as well to keep us entertained. EXCELLENT DIVE!!!!!!!!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: The viz dropped a lot on the second dive. Well worth a dive with the odd Hammerhead shark and Oceanic Blacktip shark being spotted on the dive. There were a few Potato Bass hanging around The Arch. Lots of reef fish.

And lots and lots and lots and lots of Plankton.

Warm water ... improved viz ... Protea Banks almost back to normal.

16 December 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 15m+, just milky
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: So today as we dropped in the water was warm and clean. As we got to the bottom there was a big shoal of Kingfish. The reef was nice with lots of reef fish around. Also a Round Ribbontail Ray. In mid water we had some shoaling Hammerhead sharks.

Lots of interesting Plankton. Nice relaxed dive and worth being in the water, even if the sea was a bit rough.

GREAT TO BE ON PROTEA BANKS AGAIN ... HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY TO THE SHELLY SKI BOAT CLUB!!!!

14 December 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 5 to 10m, patches of good and bad viz
Sea Temp: 19 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: So today we launched a bit early to join in the Shelly Ski Boat 40th Birthday 'fly by', but the east started picking up so we decided to rather head off to the reef.

With the bad viz we have been having, there was a huge improvement today but not the viz we expect from Protea. There was barely any current, so it was good to explore the reef which was full of reef fish. We also encountered 2 big Round Ribbontail Rays. Not much shark action but we did get a Greater Hammerhead shark mid water.

Lots and lots of Plankton in the water today which kept us entertained on the safety stop.

SO NICE TO BE ON PROTEA ... SINCE THE BOSS MAN HARDLY LETS ME DIVE ANYMORE!

20 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 10m (verrrrrrrrrry milky, very strange viz)
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: So with the very strange viz (the water is clean but cloudy), it took awhile for my eyes to adjust. Lots of reef fish around and about 8 sightings of Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out of the dive. And then there they were our Hammerhead sharks. I only managed to see 2 very close, Suresh said he saw about 7 in total, not many and hard to see with the viz, but good to know they are still around.

DIVE 2 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: The action started very quickly and we got in 3 Bull (Zambezi) sharks straight away and they stayed with us for the entire dive. We also has at least 5 Oceanic Blacktip sharks. As we got in the water to bait a huge school of Dolphins come past on while we were on scuba. I also saw a random Tuna. Great dive.

Lots of Humpback Whales seen from the boat as well as a little 'baba' breaching. Also had a huge of pod of Dolphins that came past the boat just before the baited dive. Lots of flying fish today.

Great to be out at sea.

SEA SOOOOOOOOO FLAT TODAY ... WHAT A DAY TO DIVE PROTEA BANKS!!!

19 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 10m (verrrrrrrrrry milky)
Sea Temp: 23 degrees Celsius on the top and 20 degrees Celsius at the bottom

DIVE 1 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: 8 Oceanic Blacktip sharks. 1 HUGE Tuna. Lots of Bonito.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Reef alive with fish. 1 Potato Bass. 1 Oceanic Blacktip shark.

Also a Humpback Whale seen from the boat and lots of flying fish.

With the sea so flat, it was definitely worth a day out.

SO AFTER A WEEKEND OF 5M SWELL, IT WAS AWESOME TO ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO DIVE PROTEA BANKS AGAIN.

18 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 10m (very milky due to Plankton)
Sea Temp: 25 degrees Celsius on the top and 22 degrees Celsuis at the bottom

DIVE 1 - AREA 51: The reef was alive with reef fish and so pretty down there. Lots of stunning formations. 1 Dusky shark and 4 Oceanic Blacktip sharks seen between the divers.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: 3 Oceanic Blacktip sharks seen by different divers and lots of reef fish.

Also a Humpback Whale seen from the boat.

All in all, great to be on the ocean again.

A TIGER SHARK and DOLPHINS ON SCUBA ON PROTEA BANKS.

14 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 10 - 15m and then only 5m on the second dive
Sea Temp: 18 degrees Celsius at the bottom

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: As we dropped in there was a Tiger shark sighting. The reef was alive with reef and gamefish. Then a Hammerhead shark was seen, there were probably more but viz was not amazing. Also a Potato Bass and an Eagle Ray. Then a HUGE pod of Dolphins came right up to the divers ... EPIC. On the way up a Bull (Zambezi) shark popped in to say Hi.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: The viz had dropped down to about 5m ... eeeeek. Not too much too see but at the end of the dive 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks came in.

The wind started blowing and sea conditions got very rough.

COLD DAY ... BRRR, GREAT BAITED DIVE ... RANDOM REEF DIVE, BUT GREAT TO BE ON PROTEA BANKS.

10 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 8m (overcast so reduced viz and lots of Plankton)
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

So on arriving at the dive site we were met by Dolphins again.

DIVE 1 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: Had a really good baited shark dive today with at least 6 Oceanic Blacktip sharks, a couple of Dusky sharks and 2 (Bull) Zambezi sharks. The viz was not fantastic but the action was non stop ... whoop, whoop. It was great to be on a baited shark dive again.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: A big shoal of Kob at the bottom, then nothing and more of nothing ... BUT 33 minutes later all the action started. Oceanic Blacktip sharks, Dusky sharks and (Bull) Zambezi sharks popping in and out, pretty much like our early morning baited dive, just without the bait ... really cool. At the end of the dive we were all frozen, but well worth being in the water.

Some Humpback Whales seen from the boat and we could hear them underwater.

Sea conditions got very rough as day went on.
