Dive Logbook for PROTEA BANKS

A MARLIN ON PROTEA BANKS TODAY ... WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP ... YES AND KYM WAS FINALLY ON THE DIVE ... WHAT A DAY - 17 YEARS IN THE MAKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium
Viz: 10m+ (very milky due to Plankton)
Sea Temp: 21 degrees Celsius

So today started out great. As we got past backline we had a school of very friendly Dolphins. The boat trip out continued to be exciting, with several Humpback Whale sightings and a mommy also showing off her baba.

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: The reef was alive with reef fish and lots of Bigeye Kingfish on Kingfish Gully. Then the Hammerhead sharks hits - all so fuzzy right now, but I just remember swimming in all directions after Hammerhead sharks, big ones, small ones, big shoals, small shoals ... WHEW EPIC!!!! AND THEN ... on the safety stop I was just minding my own business and then, there it was, a MARLIN ... not just any MARLIN ... A MARLIN 'poser' showing itself off to the fullest ... 17 years it took me to have this dive ... so, so, so happy right now!!!!!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles (THE ARCH): We missed The Arch, I think because I got distracted by an Oceanic Blacktip shark. We then had some more Hammerhead shark action, but not nearly as much as the first dive. Also an Eagle Ray and a Round Ribbontail Ray. Then coming up we where entertained by Dusky and Oceanic Blacktip sharks popping in and out of the dive.

All in all with great sea conditions and EPIC sightings ... I say it again - I LOVE MY JOB!!!!!!!

WHAT A DAY ON PROTEA BANKS - 3 SPECIES OF SHARKS TODAY AND FANTASTIC VIZ!

6 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 20m++
Sea Temp: 22 degrees Celsius

So on arriving at the dive site we were met by Dolphins ... you know it is going to be a great day.

Southern Pinnacles: The pinnacles were SO alive with reef fish - so so so so many. Also 1 Potato Bass. In mid water we had about 15 Hammerhead sharks hang around with the divers for awhile. Then at least 3 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and 2 Dusky sharks in and out of the dive - and with flat seas, a mild current and great viz, who could ask for more. And Pats was on the dive and managed to see some sharks for a change ...

3 SPECIES OF SHARKS TODAY ON PROTEA BANKS, INCLUDING ABOUT 100 HAMMERHEAD SHARKS!!!

2 November 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium to strong
Viz: 10m+ - grey
Sea Temp: chilly for this time of year

So today was a 'family' day of diving on PROTEA BANKS and boy was my 'family' spoilt!!!!

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Dropped into the water and had an Oceanic Blacktip shark straight away ... a good start. The pinnacles were alive with reef fish and a BIG shoal of Bigeye Kingfish came flying through. We had a few single Hammerhead sharks sightings in the distance - I think there were more Hammerhead sharks around but the viz was 'grey' so hard to make out. On the way up, yes we had them, about 100 shoaling HAMMERHEAD sharks, so nice to 'swim' with them. SUCH AN EPIC DIVE!!!!!!! Lots of Plankton in the water to entertain us on the safety stop.

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: The current had picked up and the water was sooooooo chilly. As we got down a Potato Bass took a very keen interest in my reel, got to see the inside of a Potato Bass mouth. Got swept over the reef very quickly so saw the reef fish in a blur. Coming up was epic, we were entertained by at least 5 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and a Bull (Zambezi) shark, in and out of the dive for at least 20 minutes.

All in all, a really good day on PROTEA BANKS and with relatively flat sea who could ask for more. Humpback Whales, Dolphins and Flying fish fish seen from the boat - and a 'Surfer Dolphin', but that is a long story Michelle will have to tell you.

HAMMERHEAD SHARKS ON PROTEA BANKS ... YAY, YAY and YAY!!!!!!!

31 October 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild
Viz: 7 - 10m, dirty near the surface but better viz at 30m
Sea Temp: 19 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: So after a forced extended break from diving due to terrible weather conditions Aqua Planet Dive Centre and Charter finally got to do what they do best ... DIVE PROTEA BANKS!!!

As we got out to the reef we were treated to Dolphins on the surface. We eventually decided to do the Southern Pinnacles. As soon as we got down we had a Hammerhead shark come in to say hi - it was so nice to get so close to a Hammerhead. The current was very mild so we got to enjoy the reef life - lots of Elongated Surgeon fish, Trigger fish, Morish Idols, False Fusiliers, Natal Knifejaw and a HUGE Parrot fish to name a few of the abundant reef fish today. On the way up I encountered a school of about 40 to 50 small Scalloped Hammerheads sharks ... THE HAMMERHEAD SHARK SEASON is clearly here ... whoop, whoop, whoop. After a while we also had a Bull (Zambezi) shark under us briefly. The viz was not amazing - lots of Plankton - but it was so awesome to be in the water again.

Also some Flying fish seen from the boat.

Fantastic day with sharks, sun and flat seas, who could ask for more?

Current: mild, reverse
Viz: 5m 'green' opening to 15m at the bottom
Sea Temp: 15 degrees Celsius (sooooooooooo cold)

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacles: As we hit the water it was freezing and green. As we all descended in did not warm up but the viz improved. With the reverse current we worked our way from the second cave to the first cave. Lots of Ragged-tooth sharks around. Also so many Dusky sharks darting around midwater. We also had a small Ray buried under the sand in the first cave and an Eel. Lots of reef fish. Such a pretty dive and so full of sharks ... EPIC!!!!!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles (THE ARCH): Came down just off The Arch to see so many Potato Bass darting around - must have seen at least 10, plus a Brindle Bass. Ragged-tooth sharks scattered all over the place as well as midwater and on our friggin safety stop ... seriously what is going on???? At a least another 5 Dusky shark seen on the dive. And then from midwater, to the end of dive we had the sound of Whales all the way to the end of the dive - we could not see them but the sound was so loud and the vibrations so strong, if we had had better viz we would have see them for sure ... such an incredible sound ... Current: mild

Sea Temp: 21 degrees Celsius

BAITED SHARK DIVE: So with all the recent activity on Southern Pinnacles we decided to do our baited on Southerns for a change. We had 7 Oceanic Blacktip sharks throughout the dive. 1 Bull (Zambezi) shark in the distance. Also a Potato Bass. So many Bonito on the dive. Pretty wicked dive!!!!

So many Humpback Whales seen from the boat ... and with flat seas it was well worth a day out to sea.

RAGGED-TOOTH SHARKS and DUSKY SHARKS an interesting combination!

7 August 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: medium, reverse pulling inshore
Viz: 8 - 15m
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Southern Pinnacles: Another great dive. There are still lots and lots of Ragged-tooth sharks swimming around mid water on the Southern Pinnacles which I find rather bizarre ... but hey always good to see something different. A few Dusky sharks darting in and out. Also a Brindle Bass and a Potato Bass. 2 Round Ribbontail Rays. Also my favourite A PUFFERFISH ... whoop, whoop!! The reef is still so full of gamefish and reef fish - awesome. Lots of jellies around. A REALLY GOOD DIVE!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: The viz was reduced a lot compared to the first dive but still lots of Ragged-tooth sharks to be seen. 1 Potato Bass. 1 Round Ribbontail Ray and a small Black Spotted Electric Ray. Lots of gamefish and reef fish. So many Trigger fish. Lots of jellies around including the one that I love that looks like a Dolphin.

So many Humpback Whales today seen breaching, the sea was alive and we also saw Dolphins. Dolphins and Whales were also clearly heard underwater.

It is Phil's last day ... sad face (Going to miss him like crazy!! - If you ever get a chance to dive with him, trust me, take it - it is out of this world! - Google 'MrSHARKDIVER') ... hopefully we will see him soon again with Jim ...

WOW! WOW! WOW! One of the BEST DIVES ever on PROTEA BANKS!!!

6 August 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild, reverse
Viz: 8 - 15m
Sea Temp: 18 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacles: So the first dive was great by most peoples standards. Lots of Ragged-tooth sharks in and out the caves. Also an Oceanic Blacktip shark popping in and out of the dive. Also saw a Tiger Angel fish. Lots of reef fish and so many 'jellies' in the water. All and all great diving.

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: So I must admit for me seeing the same Ragged-tooth sharks can get a bit much so I though lets see what is happening on Southern Pinnacles. The sea had been alive between the dives. Humpback Whales all over. Sharks jumping out the water, sharks swimming on the surface. Gamefish jumping out the water.

So Southerns was agreed upon ... and what a friggin choice. As we descended it looked like we were in a aquarium filled with gamefish, they were all around us. The dive could have stopped there and would have been pretty EPIC, but as divers do we continued down.

On the bottom Phil pointed out the first Ragged-tooth shark - I was a bit interested as they don't hang out on the Southern Pinnacle. Then another, and another - Ragged-tooth sharks as far as you could see. I should not have looked up - as I did we had a friggin Ragged-tooth shark swimming towards us mid water followed by shoaling Dusky sharks and a Hammerhead shark, with a couple of Oceanic Blactipp sharks popping in and out ... WHAT THE ****. Only 5 minutes now into the dive and already it is the dive of a lifetime. But what do divers do, they continue ...

So as we hit Kingfish Gully more Ragged-tooth sharks everywhere, swimming in and out of Kingfish Gully ... WHAT THE ****, oh and a Potato Bass. Bear in mind we are still surrounded by gamefish.

Then it started again one Dusky, 2 Dusky, 3 Dusky sharks ... WHAT THE **** now there are Dusky sharks as far as the eye can see, hundreds. All the way up were were surrounded by Dusky sharks and WHAT THE ****, even friggin shoaling Hammerhead sharks. The action did not stop till we got the to surface.

WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW ... certainly a DREAM DIVE ... UNFORGETTABLE, MIND BLOWING! EPIC!!!!!!!!!

Officially the coldest day on PROTEA BANKS ... 12 DEGREES ... Yes, it is PHIL's fault!

5 August 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: mild, reverse
Viz: not good ... lol
Sea Temp: 12 degrees Celsius

DIVE 1 - Northern Pinnacles: The viz was about 3m coming down but opened up to about 20m at the bottom. Still alot of Ragged-tooth sharks around. 2 Brindle Bass and a Potato Bass. Also a Lionfish and some reef fish. A whopping 14 degrees at the bottom ...

DIVE 2 - Northern Pinnacles: No viz. Ragged-tooth sharks around, probably a lot if you could see. Wait for it ... 12 degrees at the bottom ... officially the coldest by far that we have ever recorded on Protea Banks ...
