So it was inevitable, Brian left the country today so of course PROTEA BANKS was back to her old and amazing self ...

DIVE 1 - BAITED SHARK DIVE: Dive started off with a psycho Potato Bass that stole our bait ... lol. Then a psycho Remora that got fatter and fatter as we watched him devour bits of sardines. The sharks then started coming in. At first 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks and then the Bull (Zambezi) sharks. Full on action with Oceanic Blacktip and Bull (Zambezi) sharks in and out for the entire dive. We had at least 4 Bull (Zambezi) sharks and 8 Oceanic Blacktip sharks on the dive .... WOW an absolutely stunning dive!!!!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: As we got to the bottom we had an Eagle Ray. Then some Oceanic Blacktip action. Also a Round Ribbontail Ray. The some more Oceanic Blacktip and Bull (Zambezi) shark action - did not know where to look first. The one Bull (Zambezi) shark was MASSIVE!!!! As we hit Sand Shark Gully we spotted at least 5 Guitar sharks. Coming up the Bull (Zambezi) sharks were our friends following us up the entire way - awesome stuff!!!!!!  The reef was also alive with all the normal reef fish but we also had big shoals of Kingfish, Tuna and Bonito. What a fantastic non-stop action packed dive. WHOOP, WHOOP, can't wait for tomorrow!!!

YAY, a BULL SHARK on PROTEA BANKS today.

1 May 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: very strong
Viz: 15 - 20m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Northern Pinnacles: Just missed the first cave but made it to the second. Only a few sharks teeth in there and a Starfish that Brad pointed out to me ... hehe. Otherwise reef full of the normal 'pretty' fish. Had a Potato Bass and a Remora entertaining us. 1 Bull (Zambezi) shark came in to show itself mid water. Also a shoal of juvenile Rainbow Runners. All in all well worth a day in the water.

What can I say ... I NEEEEEEEED 'MY' PROTEA BANKS BACK!!!!!!

30 April 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: very strong
Viz: 10 - 15m, milky
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Southern Pinnacles: Dying for the Protea Banks we know to get back to normal. Down to just the normal reef fish as the highlight of the dive ... sad face. Nice to be in the water anyway.

WHALE SHARK still around on PROTEA BANKS!

29 April 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: very strong
Viz: 10m
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Northern Pinnacles: Another exciting day on the boat today, Jaco spotted the Whale shark just before we got in the water ... I am beginning to wonder if Jaco and the Whale shark have something going on?? The dive itself was not very eventful. The normal reef fish were there ... also had a big shoal of juvenile Rainbow Runners ... other that that very quiet and the viz had dropped a lot compared to yesterday. Hey, we had two Nudibranchs ... hehe.

While waiting to beach the tide was low so we took a drive up to Margate and got so see a big pod of Dolphins, jumping and splashing in the surf ... pretty cool. The sea was also like glass, so really better than a day in the office!

WHALE SHARK still around ...

28 April 2014 | PROTEA BANKS

Current: strong
Viz: 20m+
Sea Temp: 24 degrees Celsius

Northern Pinnacles: So if you were just on the boat today and not in the water you would have had an incredible sighting. A WHALE SHARK came right up to the boat to say Hi to Jaco ... he said it was the same size as the boat and he almost s**t in his boardshorts ... hehe. Also saw 2 Hammerhead sharks from the boat. The dive however was a completely different story. We could only boast a Round Ribbontail Ray and a Potato Bass. But with nice current and good viz it was just great to chill in the water. Also saw a Musselcracker, lots of Trigger fish, big shoal of Fusiliers and lots of other reef fish. Also a Remora hung out with us. Lots of 'jellies' as well.

Worth being in the water today. Looking forward to tomorrow on 'The Banks'.

WHALE SHARK @ 20m ... yes you read correctly - not a whale and a shark ... A WHALE SHARK!

WHAT CAN I SAY, THIS IS WHY PROTEA BANKS IS SO SPECIAL ... always full of a few surprises!!!

DIVE 2 - Southern Pinnacles: Reef so alive and full of reef fish. A Potato Bass. 1 baby Guitar shark. Hundreds and hundreds of Bonito. And an Oceanic Blacktip shark that come to say Hi on the safety stop, plus some 'jellies I have never seen before.
