11 January 2015 | PROTEA BANKS
Current: very strong
Viz: clean coming down but only 8 – 10m at the bottom
Sea Temp: 20 degrees Celsius on the bottom, warmer mid water
2 GREAT DIVES ON PROTEA BANKS TODAY!
DIVE 1 – Southern Pinnacles: The viz was not amazing at the bottom but clean mid water. We had 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks near the end. Also Hammerhead sharks popping in and out of the dive. The reef was alive with reef fish and gamefish and we had a big shoal of Bigeye Kingfish. Lots of reef and gamefish.
DIVE 2 – Southern Pinnacles (THE ARCH): We came down in a big shoal of Rainbow Runners. The Arch was stunning today with a big shoal of Kingfish that had made their home there. Also 2 Round Ribbontail Rays on the bottom (1 massive one). 3 Eagle Rays spotted off sand shark gully. Then from mid water upwards all the shark action started with a huge shoal of Hammerhead sharks being seen. After that we had the odd Hammerhead shark pop in and out as well as 2 Oceanic Blacktip sharks … a stunning dive!!
Also lots of Plankton on both dives.
With the sea flat and the sun shinning … and Dolphins seen form the boat on the way back … who can complain!!!!
